Get to know Iran’s only Oscar eligible film festival

Iran's Tehran Int'l Short Film Festival (TISFF) is the only Oscar eligible short film festival without fees among about 130 in the world.

Iran-based Tehran International Short Film Festival (TISFF) is the only Oscar eligible short film festival without fees among about 130 in the world.

In his latest interview with Iran Press news agency, the event's president Sadegh Mousavi said that it is for the first time in the history of Iranian cinema, a festival, namely the Tehran International Short Film Festival, has been added as a qualifying festival in the Short Films categories this year at the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 38th edition of the TISFF, which was opened in the Iranian capital on October 19, will grant the winners of the international section with a grand prize while introducing them directly to the Academy Awards list.

According to Mousavi, a total of 7 countries have this condition in Asia. “Among Muslim countries, only Iran, Egypt and Turkey, have this possibility.”

The TISFF is the only Oscars qualifying festival in the world that registers for free, and from March every year, the registration for the international section begins.

This year, 6,402 films from 128 countries were submitted to take part in the festival’s international section, while 1,775 films from Iran applied for the festival’s national section.

Since the inscription of the TISFF on the list of Oscar-qualifying film festivals earlier this year, 2,000 more films were submitted compared to the previous years.
